What is Clyde Reading? Challenge Clue#1

Juvenal, bachelor Brad Womack, and a major event in U.S. History have each, in some fashion, served as inspiration for this popular book.

Good luck to all, and please review the Challenge details before making your submission.

P.S.- You do not need to have read the book to enjoy the fun! All clues (even the harder ones) can be deciphered using some research skills.

“What is Clyde Reading?” Challenge Details

Clyde the Bobcat reads next to the soothing sounds of the waterfall. The LRC is extremely excited about our first ever “What is Clyde Reading?” Challenge. To prepare students and faculty for the October 31st kick-off we offer the following information in FAQ* form:

What is the Challenge and how will it work?

The Challenge is a contest in which students and faculty will use a series of clues to discover the title and author of the book our HCC mascot, Clyde Bobcat, is currently reading. Once a person thinks they know both pieces of information they will email them to our library email address. The LRC staff will announce the winners early on Friday, November 5th.

Who is eligible to participate?

All HCC students, staff and community patrons are encouraged to participate. The A.L. Freedlander LRC serves as both an academic library for HCC and an extension of the public library for all Haywood County residents so, if you live in Haywood County, you are considered a community patron!

When does the challenge begin?

The challenge begins with the posting of the first clue at 9:00 am on Monday, October 31st. Answers may be submitted at any point after the first clue goes live.

Where will the clues be posted?

LRC staff will post to our blog one clue each day from Monday the 31st to Thursday, November 4th. Clues will be posted by 9:00 am and we will send reminders via email, Twitter, and the LRC website.

Will the clues be hard?

The clues will not be too difficult but some may require a few research skills and/or thinking outside of the box to solve. The clues are intended to form an overall picture of the mystery book and author and will decrease in difficulty as the week progresses. The mystery book will be either a fiction or non-fiction print book and it will be from our collection. It will not be an academic or reference book. Clues may refer to the title, author, or both.

How do I submit my answer?

Email your answer to library@haywood.edu with the subject “What is Clyde Reading?” Please be sure to include the title and author as only those that include both will be elegible to win. Also provide your name and contact information so the LRC can notify you about your prize should you win. You may enter multiple times, but you must wait until you receive a response from an LRC staff member regarding your submission before you can submit another. If multiple entries from one patron are received without an LRC staff member response  only the first entry will be considered. Answers posted as blog comments will be deleted and not considered eligible.

Please be aware that the LRC will announce the winners via this blog, Twitter, email, and the LRC web site. By submitting an answer you are granting the LRC permission to use your name (and not any personal information) in any of those media announcements. Library staff will also receive a modest percentage of any book deals or reality tv contracts the winner may receive as a result of the national celebrity that is sure to accompany the announcement of our winners.

How does one win a prize?

Prizes will be awarded for the first correct answers received in the LRC inbox. LRC staff will use the time-stamp of the email submission in order to determine a winner. The first overall correct response from a student, a  faculty/staff member and a community patron will each win a grand prize. We will have a number of other prizes available so don’t be discouraged if you are still guessing at the answer later in the week. Though you may submit multiple entries you may win only one prize.

When does the challenge end?

The challenge ends Thursday, November 3rd at midnight EST. No entries received after that time will be considered.

When will the winners be announced?

The LRC will announce the winners via email, Twitter, and on this blog on Friday, November 5th. We will contact the winners as well.

Is the book in the picture the book for the contest?

Those of you with a keen eye (or the right software) may be able to view enough blurry details to make a decent guess as to what book Clyde is holding in the photo above. That book, though a remarkable book in its own right, is not the one from the contest.

Please don’t hesitate to contact an LRC staff member with any questions, and we hope that everyone has as much fun during this challenge as we had planning it.  Best of luck to all, and a special thanks to the wonderful staff at Malaprop’s Bookstore/Cafe for donating some wonderful book prizes!
