Tech Tips: Maintenance Schedules

keyboard, blueMost operating systems and programs will offer some form of automatic updates. Windows offers a particularly effective update system that can keep track of items in the background while programs such as Java and Flash will send pop-up windows to remind you that updates are available. While these automatic settings are helpful and convenient there are some things you should periodically check yourself in order to keep your computer running at an optimum level. We recommend the following schedule and suggest creating an e-calendar, using a planner, or simply sticking a Post-It in a prominent area of your workspace:

Weekly Checks:

  • Update anti-virus/malware & run a full scan (recommended even for those with automatic daily scans/updates)
  • Empty Temp folders, caches, history, downloads and recycling
  • Delete unnecessary files
  • Backup new or modified data files
  • OS updates

Every 2 Weeks:

  • Check for application and software updates
  • Check for browser updates

Monthly:

  • Clean computer thoroughly
  • Monitor subscriptions and licenses for software, particularly anti-virus/malware
  • Transfer larger files (pictures, documents) to external storage if necessary
